Valued ‘Ohana Participants

Charlene Schulenburg

Blessed by being raised on Maui, Char learned “kilo”. It means to watch, observe, examine or forecast. Kilo can be used to describe the action of watching or to a person who is an expert in kilo practice. Kilo also references a Hawaiian observation approach during which practitioners focus on the less obvious, more subtle things in their environment. Char recognizes the collective grief and trauma. “There is no perfect way to navigate Maui’s tragedy, there are no disaster-coaches.” Char created HUG MAUI to help the healing process begin. The inferno lit Char’s inner fire of devotion to shine through. Her intent: For feelings of hope and peace-of-mind to begin to replace the loss. Char’s unwavering work includes serving on the boards of several organizations, including her alma matre - St. Anthony School. Char co-founded Save the S. Maui Wetlands Hui, highlighting now more than ever, the need to protect wetlands that are imperative to our survival.
